Van and Tool Theft: The Ongoing Threat to UK Trades

Why van theft is still rising and how businesses can reduce the risk

For tradespeople and contractors, a van is more than transpor, it’s a mobile workspace. When theft occurs, the consequences often extend far beyond the vehicle itself.

Recent national data shows that more than 11,000 vans were stolen in 2024, with an estimated combined value approaching £200 million. Despite police efforts, recovery rates remain low, with only around 39% of stolen vans being recovered.

These figures follow years of consistently high theft levels. From 2016 to 2019, van theft averaged around 30 vehicles per day, highlighting how entrenched the problem has become.

Most Frequently Stolen Vans

Criminals tend to focus on vehicles that are widely used and easily resold.

The Ford Transit tops the list, representing more than half of all van thefts recorded in 2024.

Other commonly stolen vans include:

  • Mercedes Sprinter

  • Peugeot Boxer

  • Vauxhall Vivaro

  • Citroën Relay

Their popularity and strong second-hand markets make them valuable targets.

Tool Theft: A Growing Concern

Theft from vans is often more damaging than vehicle loss. Police records show thousands of tool theft incidents annually.

In Essex, more than 2,300 thefts from vans were recorded between 2022 and early 2024. London has seen an even sharper rise, with tool theft incidents increasing by around 70% over four years.

Replacing specialist tools can delay work for weeks, impacting income and customer confidence.

Criminal Networks and Resale

Stolen vans are frequently dismantled for parts or exported after identity changes. Investigations have linked stolen UK vehicles to international shipping routes.

Tools stolen from vans are typically resold quickly through informal channels, reducing the chance of recovery.

Reducing Exposure to Theft

Layered security remains the most effective approach:

  • Deadlocks, steering locks and immobilisers

  • Tracking systems to aid recovery

  • Secure parking and overnight tool removal

  • Tool marking and registration

Equally important is ensuring insurance policies accurately reflect vehicle and tool values.

The Wider Impact

Van theft disrupts work schedules, damages reputation and adds stress at already busy times. Prevention, combined with appropriate insurance cover, helps limit the long-term impact of these crimes.
