What to Do If You’re in an Accident and the Other Driver Drives Off

You stop at a junction or park your vehicle outside the shops… and someone hits you. But before you can exchange details, they’re gone! No insurance. No apology. No way to contact them.

Unfortunately, this scenario plays out thousands of times a year across the UK. Known as a hit-and-run, it’s not just frustrating; it’s a criminal offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

At Peter Best, we’re here to help you respond quickly and legally. Every policyholder has access to their Insurance Account and App, which contains everything they need:

  • Step-by-step accident guidance

  • 24/7 access to your emergency contacts

  • Your full policy details for faster claims support

Here’s what you need to know if the other party leaves the scene.

Ensure Safety First

Stop safely and switch on hazard lights.
Check for injuries to yourself, passengers, or others nearby.
Call 999 if someone is injured or the road is blocked.
Do not attempt to chase the other driver; it could escalate the situation or put you in danger.

Collect Evidence Immediately

Even if the driver disappears, try to record:

  • Their number plate (even partial)

  • Their vehicle’s make, model, and colour

  • Location, time, and direction of travel

  • Distinctive features such as company logos or visible damage

Also:

  • Take photos of your vehicle and the scene

  • Save any dashcam footage

  • Get witness contact details if available

All of this can help the police investigate and support your insurance claim.
Use your phone to quickly take photos and make notes while the details are fresh.

Report to the Police

By law (Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act), if the other driver fails to stop or exchange details you must report a collision within 24 hours. Call 101 or visit your local police station.

You’ll receive a crime reference number – keep this safe, as your insurer will need it.

You can also visit: www.police.uk to report an incident where the other driver fails to stop.

 Contact Your Insurer’s Claims Support

The sooner your insurer knows about an accident, the sooner they can help. If you’re a Peter Best customer please give us a call on 01376 574 000 as soon as possible.

Even if the other driver is untraceable, they should be able to guide you through a non-fault claim and may work with the Motor Insurers’ Bureau to recover your losses under an Uninsured Drivers Scheme.
