The MG Centenary

This year sees the 100th Anniversary of the iconic MG marque. And it’s a brand Peter Best has been closely linked to for over 35 years, our first Car Club partner having been the MG Car Club back in 1985.

We now work with many MG Car Clubs across the UK. The list below provides details of just a few that we’ve dealt with and whose members choose Peter Best for their class MG insurance cover. Many, if not all of these clubs will be holding or talking part in MG Centenary Events during 2023.

100 Years of MG

MG (Morris Garages) is a British car brand with a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Founded in Oxford in 1924 by William Morris, MG quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality sports cars that were both stylish and affordable.

The first MG model was the MG 14/28, which was based on the Morris Cowley and launched in 1924. This car was powered by a 1.4-liter engine and could reach speeds of up to 60 mph. In the following years, MG released several more models, including the MG J-Type and the MG K-Type, both of which were popular with racing enthusiasts.

In the 1930s, MG introduced the MG Midget, a small, lightweight sports car that was designed to be a more affordable alternative to the larger and more expensive MG models. The Midget proved to be extremely popular and was in production until the 1980s.

During World War II, MG suspended production of its civilian vehicles and instead focused on producing military vehicles and aircraft components. After the war, MG resumed production of its sports cars and introduced several new models, including the MG TC and the MG TD. These cars were popular with collectors and enthusiasts and are now considered classic vehicles.

The Classic MG Era

In the 1950s, MG released the MG MGA, a sports car with a more modern design that was powered by a 1.5-liter engine. The MGA was a major success and was followed by the MGB, which was released in 1962 and remained in production until 1980. The decades also saw the launch of the popular MG Midget.

In the 1970s and 1980s, MG released several new models, including the MG B GT, the MG Metro, and the MG Maestro. These cars were popular with buyers in the UK but struggled for sales in other markets. As a result, in the 1990s, MG was acquired by the Chinese company Nanjing Automobile Group and began producing a range of new models, including the MG ZR, the MG ZS, and the MG F. These cars were popular with buyers in the UK and Europe but struggled to gain a foothold in other markets.

In the 2000s models, including the MG TF, the MG 6, and the MG3 were launched and in 2011, MG was acquired by the Chinese company SAIC, which introduced the MG GS, the MG ZS EV, and the MG5.

Today, MG is known for producing affordable cars and SUVs.
