100 Years of the Triumph Motor Company

Triumph Motor Company was founded in Coventry, England in 1923 by Siegfried Bettmann, a German-born importer of bicycles and motorcycles. The company's first car, the Triumph 10/20, was launched in 1924 and was powered by a 1.4-liter engine. The car was well-received and helped establish Triumph as a serious player in the British car market.

In the 1930s, Triumph expanded its range with the introduction of the Super Seven and the Dolomite, both of which proved popular with the British public. The company also began exporting cars to other countries, including the United States, where the Triumph brand became synonymous with sporty, affordable automobiles.

During World War II, Triumph's factory was converted to produce tanks and other military vehicles for the British war effort. After the war, the company returned to car production with the introduction of the TR series of sports cars, which included the TR2, TR3, and TR4. These cars were powered by inline-four engines and featured sleek, aerodynamic bodywork, making them popular with sports car enthusiasts.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Triumph continued to expand its range with the introduction of the Herald, the Vitesse, and the Spitfire. These cars were powered by small four- and six-cylinder engines and featured lightweight, sporty bodywork, making them popular with drivers looking for a nimble, fun-to-drive car.

In the 1960s, Triumph also introduced the GT6, a sporty coupe powered by a six-cylinder engine and featuring distinctive fastback styling. The GT6 was well-received by critics and helped solidify Triumph's reputation as a maker of sporty, high-performance cars.

However, in the 1970s, Triumph began to struggle financially, and by the end of the decade, the company was in dire straits. In 1984, the Triumph brand and its assets were purchased by British Leyland, which later became Rover Group. Under Rover's ownership, the Triumph brand was phased out, and the last Triumph-branded car, the Acclaim, was discontinued in 1981.

Today, the Triumph name lives on as a brand under BMW ownership and producing a range of sport and cruiser motorcycles. The classic Triumph cars from the past century, however, remain popular among enthusiasts and collectors, prized for their combination of sporty performance, distinctive styling, and affordable prices. Whether you're a fan of the TR series sports cars, the Spitfire roadster, or the GT6 coupe, a classic Triumph is sure to provide driving enjoyment and a connection to iconic automotive history.
